How to Choose ERP Software for a Small Manufacturing Business in India
Most small factory owners choose ERP the wrong way: they pick whichever software their accountant knows, or whatever comes up first in a Google search. Here is a better framework.
Step 1: List what breaks without software
Before evaluating products, list the three things that cost you the most time or money each month without proper software. Common answers:
- Stock reconciliation takes 2 days every month
- GST filing is a late-night scramble
- Can't see production WIP without walking the floor
- Customer outstanding tracking is a mess of Excel sheets
Your shortlist should only include software that solves those three things in the first 30 days.
Step 2: Check GST compliance first
If your turnover is above ₹5 crore, e-invoicing (IRN generation) is mandatory. If you transport goods, e-way bills are mandatory. Any ERP you choose must handle both — and ideally include them in the base price, not as add-ons.
This alone eliminates most generic accounting software and older desktop ERPs.
Step 3: Verify manufacturing depth matches your process
Not all "manufacturing ERP" software actually has manufacturing. Ask vendors these specific questions:
- Can I create a multi-level BOM with sub-assemblies?
- Does a work order automatically consume material from stock when I complete production?
- Can I track batch numbers and expiry dates through production?
- Can I record job-work (outsourced manufacturing steps)?
If they say "yes" to all four, the manufacturing module is real. If they hedge, it's probably accounting software with a thin manufacturing wrapper.
Step 4: Total cost of ownership, not just license cost
The purchase price is only one part of the cost. Calculate the full picture:
- Monthly/annual license
- Implementation / data migration fee (₹0–5,00,000 depending on vendor)
- Add-on modules you'll need (e-invoice, API, extra users)
- Training time
- IT staff you'll need to maintain it
A ₹500/month software with ₹1,50,000 implementation cost and ₹2,000/month in add-ons is more expensive over 2 years than a ₹2,000/month all-inclusive product with free migration.
Step 5: Run the trial on real data
